Hebrews

John Calvin once stated that the human heart is a factory of idols. Because of sin, we are oriented to make idols instead of worshipping God through Jesus Christ. There may be no greater temptation for religious people than to make an idol of their religiosity. However conservative or liberal one may be in their religion, it all too easily can become an idol. The recipients of the letter of Hebrews were familiar with this temptation. They were tempted to believe that religious systems were better than Jesus. The persuasive exhortation throughout Hebrews is that Jesus is better than any religious act we can preform. It is Christ, and Christ alone, that saves. No tradition or religious system of sacrifices and offerings can make us right with God. It is Jesus or nothing.
