John Calvin once stated that the human heart is a factory of idols. Because of sin,
we are oriented to make idols instead of worshipping God through Jesus Christ. There may
be no greater temptation for religious people than to make an idol of their religiosity.
However conservative or liberal one may be in their religion, it all too easily can become an
The recipients of the letter of Hebrews were familiar with this temptation. They
were tempted to believe that religious systems were better than Jesus. The persuasive
exhortation throughout Hebrews is that Jesus is better than any religious act we can
preform. It is Christ, and Christ alone, that saves. No tradition or religious system of
sacrifices and offerings can make us right with God. It is Jesus or nothing.
